May Library Lessons
Grades K-2:
Students in grades K-2 are wrapping up their fictional unit.
Grades 3-5:
Students finished preparing for the RICAS test before April Vacation. Before starting our next unit students participated in a Library Choice board with nine different activities:
During the month of May students will be analyzing song lyrics and learning about figurative language. Figurative language is a creative way to use words and phrases beyond their literal definition. It is a way to explain something more abstract or to heighten the emotion or power of that word or phrase. It also makes text more relatable, engaging, and FUN! Types of figurative language include: Similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. In these lessons students will be able to locate different types figurative language in song lyrics and in poems. Students will also be creating their own poems.
Students in grades K-2 are wrapping up their fictional unit.
- Kindergarten students learned about story elements: Characters, Setting, Problem and Solution, and Sequence. After each lesson students completed a cut an paste/sorting activity to show their understanding.
- Grade 1 students also learned about the story elements but are creating their own fictional stories. Students are working on what will go on each page of their book before making the final draft. Students can't wait to share these with you!
- Grade 2 students are finishing their read aloud of "The Secret Chicken Society" by Judy Cox. Students will then pick their favorite part of the story and turn it into a comic strip!
Grades 3-5:

- Interland: a Digital Citizenship game teaching students to be safe, responsible, and respectful on the internet.
- Dance Party: Using Code.org students create characters and code their dance moves.
- Quick Draw: Students draw pictures and see if the computer can guess their creations.
- Auto Draw: Students use the computer to create a work of art.
- Blob Opera: Students create their own music using musical blobs.
- Code.org Art Lab: Students create a drawing through code.
- Typing Club: Students can learn and practice typing effectively using the home row keys.
- Lite Brite: Just like the toy! Students create works of art with dots of light!
- Brick Building: Students build digital Lego creations.

Grade 1: Publishing their own stories
Library Announcements
All students should be keeping their books in their backpacks for safe keeping.
All students will receive a bookmark on check out day to remind them when their book was checked out and when it needs to return to school. Please keep this bookmark in your child's book.
End of the School Year Procedure:
Students in grades K-2 will receive their FINAL book from the Hope & Clayville School Library the week of May 10th. They will need to return their library books the week of May 24th.
Students in grades 3-5 will receive their FINAL book from the Hope & Clayville School Library May 17th. They will need to return books the week of May 31st. (Monday Students: May 17th is a DL day. Arrangements will be made so they will receive their books on Wednesday of that week)
All Books will need to be returned to Mrs. Serdechny before the last day of school.
- Backpacks keeps library books dry when its raining or snowing.
- It protects the books from pets.
- By keeping their book in their backpack they will never forget their book on library day since it travels to and from school.
