RI Children's Book Award Challenge
We are starting our first annual Rhode Island Children’s Book Award (RICBA) Challenge! This challenge will take place amongst 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders across the district from December to March. Each year, the RICBA committee nominates twenty excellent books appropriate for upper elementary students that librarians across the state promote. We are inviting students in these grades to read as many of the RICBA nominees as possible from now until March. All students who participate get to vote on their favorite book before the winner is announced at the end of March. If enough students vote, the School Libraries will get one free copy of each book on the nominee list! Voting will take place in Library class. To make things more exciting, we are challenging Scituate Students in Grade 3-5 to read at least 10 of the books on the list. If they complete this challenge, they will be awarded a RICBA Challenge T-shirt! See below:
The School Libraries currently own one copy of each title that students will be allowed to check out. These titles are also available at your local public library and online.

Above are links you can click on to access the e-Book format of each of the 2021 RICBA nominees on Destiny Discover. Once each student logs in (username: sci#### / password: sci), he/she will be able to check out each book if it is “In” under the heading: 2021 RICBA. After reading each book, students will need to fill out a Google Form to demonstrate they completed the book. Students will access these Google Forms in their Library Google Classrooms under "RICBA Information" in the classwork tab.
This is a fun way to promote reading and we are hoping for a lot of participation and excitement around this challenge! Please reach out if you have any questions: [email protected] Thank you for your support.

Library Reminders
Due to distance learning in December into the first week of January, please keep your child's book in a safe place until their next check out week.
NEXT check out weeks are:
For Grades K-2: January 19-22, 2021
For Grades 3-5: January 11-15, 2021
Please make sure your student has their library book at school during their next check out week so they can get a new book. Thank you.
1. Kindergarten and Grade 1 Students should have received a Ziploc bag with their name on it as their "Library Bag". Please keep the book in the Library Bag when your child is not reading it to help keep it safe.
2. Even though students in grades Kindergarten and second are holding onto their library books for two weeks at a time, we are still practicing "normal" returning procedure. Students will be asked to show me their books each week, whether they are returning them or not. It is good practice to return their library book to their backpack each time they are finished reading it.
3. All students should be keeping their books in their backpacks for safe keeping.
4. All students will receive a bookmark on check out day to remind them when their book was checked out and when it needs to return to school. Please keep this bookmark in your child's book.
